About Smart School Choice

I built the tool I wished existed when I was choosing a school for my daughter.

Like most parents, I started with questions and far too many browser tabs open. I spoke to other parents, students and teachers. I visited schools. I compared websites, searched rankings, read forums, cross-checked information — and still felt like I was making one of the biggest decisions of my child's life without a clear way to compare what actually mattered.

And I remember thinking: Why is this so hard?

My daughter was born just before the school cut-off. Academically, she was ahead of her age. Socially and emotionally, she still needed time. Her school recommended an extra year in kinder — not because she wasn't capable, but because they believed it was the right long-term decision for her.

At the time, it was difficult to hear.

Looking back, they were absolutely right.

Years later, my daughter was offered a Year 7 scholarship at another school. The appeal was largely social — friends she already had there, and other friends who would be making the same move. On paper, it made sense.

But when we met with the school, one thing stood out immediately. In one particular area, her current school was significantly ahead. Moving would have meant going backwards academically, effectively repeating work she had already covered. When my daughter asked how they would approach this, there was no clear answer.

Meanwhile, when her current school learned she was considering leaving, everything changed. There were meetings, phone calls and genuine conversations about her future. They made it clear she mattered — not as an enrolment number, but as a student.

Not long after, her school held their Year 7 information evening. It was exceptional. The difference between the two experiences was obvious. There was simply no comparison.

I turned down the scholarship, and she chose to stay where she was.

What surprised me most was that nobody ever followed up to understand her decision.

That moment stayed with me.

A twelve-year-old had better questions than the information available could answer.

I understand this journey personally too. I attended multiple schools throughout my own education — not because of anything specific, but because finding the right fit matters. Not every school is right for every child.

And when you do find the right fit, it changes everything.

That's the problem Smart School Choice was created to solve.

The issue isn't that information doesn't exist. It's that parents are forced to piece it together from everywhere — school websites, rankings, government data, reviews, forums, open days and word of mouth.

Government data exists, but it can be difficult to navigate and compare meaningfully. Other platforms may focus heavily on rankings, limited datasets or sponsored visibility. Parents are often left trying to build a complete picture on their own.

I've spent more than 15 years working across media and technology in the Australian education sector. I understand how schools communicate, how parents search, and how difficult it can be to make confident decisions with fragmented information.

Smart School Choice exists to bridge that gap.

A platform where parents can search, compare and explore schools more clearly — without needing twenty tabs open just to make sense of the options. A place that combines real data with the human side of decision-making, designed to help families feel informed and confident, not overwhelmed.

Because every child is different. Every school is different. And the right match between the two can shape a child's entire experience of education.

I've seen that firsthand with my own daughter. She will finish her schooling at the same school where she started — not because she had to, but because it turned out to be the right place for her all along.

Choosing a school will probably never feel easy. But it should feel clearer than it does today.

My goal is simple — to help other families find that feeling too.
